How to Cancel Drift (Salesloft Drift) — 30-60 Day Notice & Auto-Renewal Escape
Salesloft acquired Drift in 2024 — which means your non-renewal notice has to be addressed to the right legal entity, or the retention team can argue you served the wrong party. This is the operator runbook: confirm which entity holds your contract, calendar the 30-60 day notice window, send written notice through three channels, and survive the post-acquisition Salesloft consolidation pitch.
The 60-second summary
- Confirm the legal entity — pull the signature block on your most recent signed order form. Drift Inc. vs. Salesloft Inc.
- Find the renewal date + notice clause — typically 30-60 days, but a Salesloft master agreement may override the Drift order form.
- Send written notice through 3 channels — billing@drift.com AND billing@salesloft.com, your AE/CSM with CFO copied, certified mail to Salesloft HQ.
- Itemize every Drift product line — Conversations, Email, Video, Engage, Insights.
- Demand acknowledgment in 5 business days and plan 14-30 day replacement overlap.
Step 1 — Confirm whether your contract is under Drift or Salesloft
Salesloft acquired Drift in 2024. New contracts since the acquisition are typically signed under the Salesloft entity; pre-2024 contracts are often still under Drift Inc. The non-renewal notice has to be addressed to the right legal entity or the retention team can argue notice was not properly served. Pull your latest signed order form: check the entity name in the signature block, the billing address, and the email domain on invoices. If the order form pre-dates the acquisition and was never re-papered, you have a Drift contract. If it was renewed in 2024 or later, it is almost certainly under Salesloft now.
Operator tip: If invoices are coming from Salesloft.com but the original signed contract is under Drift Inc., send the non-renewal notice to BOTH entities. Belt-and-suspenders is cheap; a contested notice is not.
Step 2 — Find the renewal date and notice window in your order form
Drift / Salesloft Drift annual contracts typically auto-renew with a 30-60 day non-renewal notice clause. Check the order form for: (a) the contract end date, (b) the notice period required (look for "Term and Renewal" or "Auto-Renewal"), (c) any bundled Salesloft contract that may co-term with Drift. If Drift was sold to you as part of a Salesloft master agreement bundle, the renewal date and notice clause may live on the Salesloft MSA, not the Drift order form.
Operator tip: When Drift is bundled with Salesloft Cadence or Engage, the renewal calendar is set by the parent Salesloft contract — not Drift. Confirm in writing which contract the renewal clock runs on before sending notice.
Step 3 — Submit written non-renewal notice — copy this template
Send the same notice through three channels simultaneously: (a) email to billing@drift.com AND billing@salesloft.com (if entity is unclear), (b) email to your account executive and CSM with your CFO copied, (c) certified mail to Salesloft HQ at 3340 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 2400, Atlanta, GA 30326. The certified mail receipt is your hard legal proof if anything is ever disputed.
Subject: Notice of Non-Renewal — [Your Company Name] — Drift Contract [Number] To Whom It May Concern, This email serves as formal written notice that [Your Company Name] will not be renewing its Drift subscription at the conclusion of the current contract term ending [Renewal Date]. Account details: - Company name: [Your Company Name] - Account email / admin login: [Admin Email] - Drift / Salesloft contract number: [Contract Number] - Order form ID(s): [Order Form Numbers] - Current renewal date: [YYYY-MM-DD] Per Section [X] of our agreement, please confirm receipt of this non-renewal notice and acknowledge that the account, including all add-ons (e.g., Drift Conversations, Drift Email, Drift Video, Drift Engage), will not auto-renew. Provide written acknowledgment within 5 business days. Thank you, [Your Name] [Your Title] [Your Company]
Operator tip: List every Drift product line by name in the notice. Drift Conversations, Drift Email, Drift Video, and Drift Engage have historically been billed under separate SKUs and can be reinterpreted as out of scope if not enumerated. A single "Drift" notice can leave you on the hook for $20K+ of "uncovered" add-ons.
Step 4 — Confirm written acknowledgment within 5 business days
Drift / Salesloft should reply with written confirmation within 5 business days. If silence: (a) reply-all asking for written acknowledgment, (b) escalate to your CSM's manager and the Salesloft VP of Customer Success, (c) loop in your CFO. The certified mail tracking number is your backstop. No acknowledgment by day 7? Send a third notice marked "URGENT — Repeat Notice of Non-Renewal."
Operator tip: Save every send-receipt and the certified mail tracking in a folder labeled "Drift non-renewal — [Year]". Drift has historically been one of the more cooperative auto-renewal vendors, but post-acquisition Salesloft retention is more aggressive — assume you may need the paper trail.
What if you missed the 30-60 day window?
You still have leverage — just not the "clean exit" kind. Goal becomes damage control: minimize the cost of the locked-in year and prevent another auto-renewal trap. Pick the move that fits your situation:
- Negotiate a downgrade instead of fighting renewal. Drift retention has flex to drop you from Premium to Standard or cut chat seat counts. They prefer keeping a downgraded account vs. losing the logo entirely.
- Drop add-ons without dropping the core. Drift Email, Drift Video, and Drift Engage have separate line items. You can often cut everything except core Conversations to slash 40-60% of spend mid-term.
- Co-term with the Salesloft renewal. If you have a separate Salesloft contract, ask to co-term Drift to its renewal date — sometimes you can get a partial credit and a single-vendor consolidation discount in exchange.
- Threaten chargeback only if billing process violated terms. If Salesloft missed the renewal notification email window in your contract, you have leverage. Don't invoke chargeback theater unless you have actual procedural footing — it burns the relationship if you ever come back to Salesloft.
How Drift / Salesloft will respond — the retention playbook
Post-acquisition Salesloft retention is more aggressive than pre-acquisition Drift. The playbook to expect, ranked by what is real leverage vs. what is noise:
- The 24-72 hour escalation call. Your CSM (and post-acquisition, sometimes a Salesloft account director) will call within days. Their playbook: (a) re-pricing flexibility, (b) bundled Salesloft + Drift discount, (c) new Drift AI features (Drift Engage AI, Drift Insights). Listen for restructuring; ignore feature roadmap.
- The Salesloft consolidation pitch. Post-acquisition, retention will offer a discounted "all-in-one" Salesloft + Drift bundle. Calculate carefully — sometimes it is real savings, sometimes it locks you deeper into Salesloft for an extra year of co-termed renewal pain.
- The competitive comparison deck. Side-by-sides vs Intercom, HubSpot, Qualified. The decision is already made. Politely shut down: "We have done the comparison."
- The VP-level "save." A VP-level call typically offers 25-40% off or seat reduction. Use it as your floor for either restructure OR clean exit, never both.
After cancellation is confirmed — the runway
- Export conversations, contacts, and playbooks. Chat transcripts, qualified-lead records, bot logic, routing rules. Drift Insights reports are partially exportable.
- Stand up replacement chat 7-14 days early. Intercom, Qualified, or HubSpot Chat. Test routing into your CRM before Drift cuts off so no qualified leads get dropped.
- Audit the order form for orphan add-ons. Drift Email, Video, Engage, Insights may have separate auto-renew dates. Notice should explicitly list every product line.
- Block-calendar the next year. When you sign a replacement, calendar 90 days before its renewal as your new non-renewal notice deadline.
Where most teams go after Drift
Replacement choice depends on your motion. Most exit paths land in one of three buckets:
- Intercom — most mature B2B chat platform, similar feature set to Drift Premium, often comparable price.
- HubSpot Chat — free with Sales or Marketing Hub. The right shape if you already run HubSpot and just need qualification chat without ABM theater.
- Qualified — purpose-built for Salesforce-native ABM chat with a strong AI SDR play. Right shape for Salesforce shops with high-velocity inbound.
